Just when it seemed like the Grand National Roadster Show had gotten to be as big and about as good as it could get, after last year's celebration of its 60th consecutive running, they go and step it up even further. That's right, on top of the usual vast array of show cars-ranging from America's Most Beautiful Roadster contenders to panel-painted lowriders-filling over half a dozen buildings at the Pomona Fairplex, the show expanded itself to include two brand-new exhibits: the Vintage Race Car Display and, the one we're most proud of, Cars That Made A Difference: Famous Magazine Cover Cars. Seems that Don Smith prefers... Seems that Don Smith prefers his '32 Fords brightly colored-that, or he wanted to make sure "HemRod" (his Tudor built by Pinkee's) had a suitable mate! "GoldenRod", his latest, was an AMBR contender, entered on behalf of Roy's Body Shop (Beach City, TX). Wheels are Mike Curtis-crafted; power by H&H Flatheads. Judging from the feedback received during the show alone, those two components of the Grand National were quite the success. But rather than interpret the cover car display in our obviously biased manner (we were responsible for putting it on), we've given roving rod reporter Dain Gingerelli the honor, which you'll find further ahead in our show coverage. As for the historic racers, well, much like the 75th Anniversary '32 Ford exhibit, that too was the talk of the crowds, and deservedly so. But there was more-much, much more. As has been the case pretty much since its inception, the competition was fierce for America's Most Beautiful Roadster honors. And so too was the variety of the vehicle entrants-everything from polished traditional to over-the-top contemporary. In the end, the latter (Mike Dingman's '33 roadster) would leave with the tall trophy and the trimmings that come with. Above and beyond the "main building" spectacles, this year's GNRS didn't skip a beat, with its supporting attractions, including the Suede Palace and the outdoor Drive-In, where all the voids between the Fairplex buildings are filled with cars on Saturday and Sunday. To sum it up, the Granddaddy of Them All made history ... once again.  One of the last vehicles to...  One of the last vehicles to be featured on Speed Channel's Chop, Cut, Rebuild may actually end up being one the show's coolest-at least as far as we're concerned! Ted's Rod Shop was filmed transforming this '40 Merc from rusty shell into the candy-coated custom you see here.  Quite a few of the manufacturers/exhibitors...  Quite a few of the manufacturers/exhibitors had their booths filled with some great local talent. The Audio Shoppe and Arc Audio teamed up with Richie Valles' '50 Chevy fastback "Tangerine Dream".  If you hadn't noticed, color...  If you hadn't noticed, color was anything but bland this year-but that's to be expected from someone like Darryl Hollenbeck (Vintage Color Studio), the artist responsible for the throwback theme on Norm Ricardo's '59 Ford wagon "Mi Rancho Grande". Here's another one you'll be seeing more of soon.  Rick Dore used the 61st Grand...  Rick Dore used the 61st Grand National as a coming out for his latest sweetheart, a beautiful blue '50 Caddy roadster complete with a fifty-fifty (half painted, half fabric-covered) Carson-style top. Look for more on this one in as we feature it in a coming issue.  In the main building, Jeb...  In the main building, Jeb Scolman set up camp to display some of his shop's product, including a customer's '39 convertible currently underway. You may recall the '36 three-window Scolman built for John Mearns that R&C featured not too long ago.  Richard Zocchi's not afraid...  Richard Zocchi's not afraid to start with a make/model that few others would ever consider-and the outcome's always the same: a cool custom. His '68 Dodge Polara made the grade thanks to John Aiello's handiwork, Art Himsl's artwork, and Bob Divine's interior work.  Our ol' pal Jim Noteboom,...  Our ol' pal Jim Noteboom, aka Bones, brought out his newest custom, a '37 Packard he's dubbed "Zoot Zooter", a collaboration between Ken Ginnings (chassis/fab), Lopez Enterprises (paint), and Deluxe Auto Interiors. Fittingly, Bones chose a '55 Packard V-8 for power.  It wasn't too long ago that...  It wasn't too long ago that R&C featured Robert Lomas' memorable chopped '34 Ford three-window. This year, while his GNRS entry is quite a bit more on the mild side, the '51 Vicky is no less as gorgeous-and probably a lot easier to see out of!  Richard Munz admired a Stanley...  Richard Munz admired a Stanley Wanlass sculpture so much that he commissioned Jim Busby to create a full-scale version of the Ardun-powered '32 roadster. About the only part Busby wasn't able to nail down was the sculpture's driver-until he test-drove it for the first time, that is!  There was much talk about...  There was much talk about "new debuts", and one of those topics of discussion just happened to be George Poteet's "Miller Hauler Special". Designed and built by Brian Stinger (Stinger's Hot Rod Shop), the '32 was done as a tribute to the race car legend it's named after-Harry A. Miller. "Our version of his Indy shop truck", as they refer to it. The Millard Sheets Center... The Millard Sheets Center for the Arts was the stage for the R&C/STREET RODDER exhibit-and just as some of us had anticipated, it came off just like an opening at an art gallery ... with cars! R&C Cover Cars Past And Present Made A Special Appearance At The GNRS
Highboy hot rods and cool customs as the feature exhibit in an art gallery? That's like asking Rosie O'Donnell and Ugly Betty to host American Idol, or worse yet, model the latest in two-piece swimwear. What gives? What gives is that Rod & Custom, acting in cahoots with STREET RODDER, hosted a rather special-and landmark-exhibit at this year's Grand National Roadster Show. The exhibit was entitled "Cars That Made A Difference," and it took place in the Millard Sheets Center for the Arts, an art gallery that's situated in a corner of the Pomona Fairplex, site for the annual Roadster Show the past few years now. Specifically, the cars that composed the exhibit were former cover cars that, through the years, appeared on the fronts of R&C and SR. No, we couldn't begin to include every hot rod and custom that made it to those hallowed pieces of editorial real estate; there simply wasn't enough room in the exhibit hall for that. Heck, even Rosie and Betty can't make every Hollywood engagement. But we managed to include as many cars as we could for this gig, with the notion that we'd also respect the art gallery heritage in the process. So, first, a few words about the Sheets art gallery: The gallery's namesake-Millard Owen Sheets-was an artist of repute, born in Pomona, California. Sheets' oil paintings, sketches, and renderings were well known and respected among his peers and art aficionados, and after he passed away, the art community and Fairplex management saw fit to name this gallery in his honor. The gallery building offers an intimate setting, too; carpeted floors, walls painted in soft hues, low ceilings, and diffused overhead lighting create an intimate setting to distance you from the clamor and bustle of the outside world so that you can focus on the subject at hand-art. Or, in this case, rod and custom art. As you might guess, we had fun putting this exhibit together, but in the process we wracked our brains trying to cull the car herd to a workable number. We-meaning R&C-also effectively had only half the floor space to work with. Remember, we were sharing the gallery with our friends across the hallway here at the R&C/SR headquarters. You'll notice in the accompanying photos that there are no annoying stanchions laced with ropes or chains to obstruct the view of each car. We did this for a reason-this was an art exhibit, dangit, and art should be enjoyed in its fullest. So we bared the cars to the world, and we offer hearty and special thanks to the participating car owners for agreeing to work with us in that capacity, too. We realized that we were placing their cars in potential harm's way, but everyone agreed that this was the only way that cover cars should be viewed. Don't recognize Lee Pratt's... Don't recognize Lee Pratt's '58 Impala as a past cover car? That's because it was the only "future feature" vehicle in the exhibit, which along with his gorgeous '49 Ford, will hit newsstands and mailboxes this summer! GNRS show promoter John Buck, with the cooperation of the Pomona Fairplex, worked with us to spiff the exhibit even further by allowing our magazines to decorate the walls with poster-size (24x36) metal reprints of the covers that showcased the respective cars on display. Everyone thought that was a nice touch, and each of those reproduction covers included information about the featured car and its past and current owner. In addition, we lined the walls with about 100 other enlarged photos from our archives, so there was always something new and inviting to catch your eye. But all that amounted to mere frosting on the cake; the cars remained the main attraction. Even so, we had one more surprise up our corporate sleeve-many of the cars' builders and owners were there too. Their presence allowed visitors at the art center to mingle and talk with them. At some point during the three-day show you were sure to see the likes of Blackie Gejeian, Tommy Ivo, Magoo, Jimmie Vaughan, Chip Foose, Roy Brizio, Bob Kolmos, Bobby Alloway, and former R&C staffers Jim "Jake" Jacobs and Spence Murray at our display. As for Rosie and Betty, we kept them on American idle while we resumed our stroll at the GNRS. And for three incredible days we hustled from building to building, loving every minute of this annual rite of passage on the road to selecting America's Most Beautiful Roadster.  Another "milestone" hot rod...  Another "milestone" hot rod from the past, Tom Pollard's '29 stands out among the pack, even though it barely resembles the way it appeared on the Aug. '54 cover. But that's perfectly acceptable, as the Lime Gold with flames seems to be preferred by many, including the car's current owner, Richard Loe.  Jimmie Vaughan made a personal...  Jimmie Vaughan made a personal appearance at the exhibit, and his special guest just happened to have received a recent freshening up prior to coming out. During R&C's "neon" kick during the '90s, the cover featuring his Fleetline stands out as one the era's most subtle-and that's a good thing!  Johnnie Overbay and his crew...  Johnnie Overbay and his crew at Reno Rods & Customs had what was probably the only "dual-purpose" vehicle on display-the Norm Grabowski's Kookie T has appeared on the cover of both R&C and SR, as well as other titles, in varying form (original and clones). Owner Ron Kregoski's is probably the closest to the real thing as you can get!  One of your current editor's...  One of your current editor's all-time favorite customs, the Sam Hollingsworth '57 Nomad, was just cloned by the same person responsible for creating the original-Richard Graves. The May '67 cover model's "body double" was indeed an honor to have at the show.  R&C did two "Daisy Duke" type...  R&C did two "Daisy Duke" type covers with Pete & Jake-the first featured Jake's '34 along with the California Kid; the follow-up mimicked the original, but with Limefire and the "pre-Jacoupage" version of Jake's '29 tub. Thanks to Pete Chapouris, Jason Slover, and Jake Jacobs, we were able to have both covers represented in four-wheeled presence.  Among the prized pieces of...  Among the prized pieces of art on display, Richard Munz brought the Neal East'32 roadster (in all its restored glory) that graced R&C's first "full-size" cover after the magazine had abandoned its "little pages" format.  Current caretaker Julian "Jules"...  Current caretaker Julian "Jules" Alvarez brought out past R&C editor Bud Bryan's '29 roadster, which was featured on the '71 Winter Quarterly, with another R&C alumni, Jim "Jake" Jacobs.  Among the prized pieces of...  Among the prized pieces of art on display, Richard Munz brought the Neal East'32 roadster (in all its restored glory) that graced R&C's first "full-size" cover after the magazine had abandoned its "little pages" format.  The Historic Race Car building...  The Historic Race Car building was literally packed wall to wall with museum-quality rolling vintage art. Like the Hilborn car, the Eddie Miller Lakester was another piece of Bonneville history on hand for all to admire.  The Warth-Hilborn Streamliner...  The Warth-Hilborn Streamliner is without a doubt one of landspeed racing's most important pieces of history-even if it doesn't exist any longer. Thanks to the Lattin brothers, people can appreciate the car's heritage with their beautiful replica of the record-setting racer.  On Saturday and Sunday, the...  On Saturday and Sunday, the Suede Palace expanded its perimeters beyond the building's walls-there were probably just as many, if not more, cars outside this year. Among them, Dave "Skittles" Cervantes' '60 El Camino.  The Suede Palace once again...  The Suede Palace once again had plenty to offer, from satin to shiny and even some bare metal. Pauly Stone's dark green and gold scalloped Buick is a perfect example of the quality and style of cars on hand-nice, simple, and sensible!
