Each year we anticipate one big show: Goodguys Pacific Northwest Nationals. It's not just for the cars; we know a good turnout is part in parcel with the Northwest scene. It's more for the weather--the region known for its wet climate has blessed us with clear, sunny days for the past few years.
Well, we got what we wished for; the cars showed up, the people mingled, and the sun burned off any semblance of airborne moisture--not a puffy in the sky. So we thought we'd offer a snippet of what we saw over the weekend. Look for coverage in sister publication STREET RODDER magazine--they've got a full-blown event coverage coming soon!

Brad Purser drove his '52...

Brad Purser drove his '52 Mercury M1 from Coquitlam, British Columbia. We'd seen it before but this time it wore metallic rose-colored basecoat with no clear. It's a real cool number with a heavy chop, chrome wheels, and pinstripe whitewalls.

Word has it Joyce Johnson's...

Word has it Joyce Johnson's flattie is the fastest on the grounds. Evidently she's willing to prove it; she track times it regularly. The Portland runner runs a '48 Merc against a C4 automatic. The '29 has all sorts of early goodies including an Impala wheel, Merc caps, and a right-on tuck trim.

We'll describe David and Gayle...

We'll describe David and Gayle Haskell's '60 Pontiac with one word: absolutely totally bitchin! It's got radials pinstripe whitewalls, a tube grille, and a pristine clear wheel. The icing on the cake: the absolutely drop-dead gorgeous candy/gold/black fade spray.

Vern LaCoursiere, a Puyallup...

Vern LaCoursiere, a Puyallup local, pilots an oh-so-neat '41 Chevy convertible. It sports jumbo whitewalls wrapped around hubcaps made from Dodge Lancer, Cadillac, and Edsel pieces. It's subtly finessed and tasty.

Here's a history lesson: Wayne...

Here's a history lesson: Wayne Mahaffey finished this '35 convertible sedan in 1951. It ran and still runs a flathead Cadillac, '49 Plymouth bumpers, a Crestliner wheel, and a Portland Top Company top. Best of all, Mahaffey still owns the car. It went away a few times, but he found it again and drives it in the JB Bartlett restoration guise.

Darrell Block's '64 Nova is...

Darrell Block's '64 Nova is truly built for speed. It's a Great Falls, Montana heater with a 400ci Chevy, a four-speed stick, an Allston frontend, and healthy dose of Billet Specialties goodies and details. Block left no stone unturned on this car.
