Don Kline's fanaticism for Deuces goes back to his childhood scale-model days. He took his first ride in a Flattie-powered five-window when he was in high school and met his future wife, Sue, while cruising in a coupe of his own. He already had a red steel three-window and an all-steel teal Tudor in his garage when he decided to try his hand at building a five-window coupe, finished with lots of help from John Matthews at Vintage Specialties. Don wanted the coupe done resto rod style with lots of chrome and no billet. The car could be 'glass but had to look like steel. A Gibbons body with a Rootlieb hood and original running boards from the swap meet were dropped onto a TCI chassis with a 4-inch dropped axle. Power comes from a Ford SVO 5.0 with aluminum heads, three two-barrel Holleys, and a Hurst-shifted Tremec five-speed. Don sometimes swaps the solids rims for polished five-spoke Americans to take the coupe from the '50s into the '60s. The Glide bench got the Ultrasuede roll 'n' pleat treatment at Pearl's Upholstery Shop and was finished just in time for the Nats East in York, Pennsylvania, where the pea-green coupe ended up in the winner's circle.
