Like many Young Guns, Matt Hiatt was fortunate enough to grow up in a family of hot rodders and old car enthusiasts. In fact, his grandfather owned this '40 coupe for 25 years before passing it down to Matt and helping him with the two-year buildup. Thanks, Grandpa!
Matt says he has always liked the rotund '40 body style, so there was no need to do anything radical to the body. Instead, he concentrated on getting the stance nailed down with a Groundhawg Mustang II IFS and Ford 9-inch rearend on Posies SuperSlide springs. Speedway front disc brakes and American five-spokes got things rolling.
With bright PPG Monarch Orange Pearl paint, the coupe is hard to miss. It's also hard to catch thanks to a '64-vintage 327 with Edelbrock RPM heads, Performer RPM cam, roller rockers, and an Air-Gap intake, all of which is backed by a TCI-equipped TH350. When Matt sent in this photo, he was still ironing out the interior details and hoping to get some air conditioning installed.
