By the time we got to Alan Swedberg's shop, he had already made the preliminary cuts on the roof. The rear windows were cut out of the previously blank panel sides, and the window frames were removed (hardtop style).

Chopping the top was radical enough, but the original barn doors were replaced with a two-part tailgate/hatch window from a '98 Olds Bravada. The width was fine, but there was a huge gap at the bottom and the general contours needed a lot of refinement.

The top was chopped 3 inches in the back and 2 inches in front. The front windshield posts had to be cut off and slanted back. No metal was removed from the center of the roof. This shot also shows that there is a lot of work left to convert the doors to hardtop-style units.

Along with converting the doors to hardtop-style units, the B-pillars were slanted forward for a Nomad look. New driprails had to be fabricated, as well.

The Olds Bravada lower tailgate was about 8 inches too short to fill the gap left by the original panel doors. A template was made for a complete new outer skin. In the process the outside handle was removed. A remote release latch was installed.

This rear 3/4-view shows how perfectly Alan Swedberg integrated the modern tailgate with the '47 body. The rear corners are complex, but the tailgate looks like a factory item. The taillights weren't installed at this time.

Fifth-Generation Corvette taillights and a recessed license plate holder were fitted to the lower valance. This shot with the tailgate lifted shows how the inner sill area had to be custom fabricated to mate the new tailgate to the original cargo floor.

Originally, the panel's gas filler was between the door and the right rear fender. A modern gas filler door was installed in the right rear fender in alignment with the new Rock Valley gas tank.

Gary, Terry, and Shawn at Kimbridge Enterprises put in a lot of tedious hours removing all the old paint. The body was virtually rust free, but it still needed a lot of straightening and fine-tuning to bring it up to street rod standards. New, smooth, metal running boards from Gateway Rod & Custom in Collinsville, IL, will replace the ribbed stock units.

After the main bodywork and related modifications were complete, the truck was prepped for a new spray-on insulation material from Cool Car Ceramic. Cool Car Ceramic insulation looks pretty much like paint after it has been applied, but this space-age material insulates again heat and cold, as well as providing excellent noise reduction.
