Those who served in the armed forces may remember the slogan of the U.S. Armys 1st Infantry Division: If youre gonna be one, you might as well be a Big Red One! Veteran rodder Jack Troup, a Maryland police officer, has a similar thought: If youre going to own a hot rod, you might as well own an arrest-me-red five-window Deuce coupe.
A steel coupe body and original frame were purchased back in 1987 from a Kenosha, Wisconsin, police officer but sat untouched for 10 years. One day, fellow police officer and friend Kathy Brown urged Jack to create the street rod of his dreams and added moral support throughout the construction. Built with help from Larry Rhodes and his son, Ron, Jacks immaculate and well-detailed highboy has recently earned top honors at a number of national rod runs: a Top 25 from the Shades of the Past in 1997, a Magnum Axle award, and a Real Hot Rod award from Goodguys, plus Street Rodders Top 10, just to name a few.
The chassis is a Barry Lobecks Hot Rod Shop and Larry Rhodes Auto collaboration that employs raised crossmembers at the ends and tube crossmembers through the center. (Notice how the exhaust runs between the framerails.) The Mullins steering box, steering arms, and linkage are also modified to allow the coupe to sit very low without dragging anything on the driveway.
We first photographed Jacks Deuce coupe at the NSRA Nats East in York, Pennsylvania. Every time we saw him and the coupe, he was picking up another award, which verified our opinion that his was a special little five-window highoy. Hands up or hands down, this is a police escort anyone would be proud to have.
