With Woodies, perception and reality are split down the core. Perception: Surfside frolicking and frivolity and the recollection of a simpler time when no girl owned a one-piece swimsuit. Reality: These days, a woodreau represents among the most financially devastating projects you can tackle. Pay to play.

Vince Martino did, and we’re enthralled with the subtle result from a roots-up redo that left no panel untouched on the body or the frame. The pounding began at Lee Bumgardner’s Zoomer’s Automotive in Denver, Colorado, in January 1995 just after the ’50—one of about 22,300 woodies made that year—was purchased in December. By May 2000, the Darryl Mayabb illustration had popped to life with sweet splinters, twinkling hues of Oz, and a grille treatment that probably has you wondering if it’s really a ‘51. It just looks that way. It also looks like a Rod & Custom 100 Best pick, which it was for 2000. We’re green with, you know, jealousy.
