Some rodders think being different means painting your wheels a color other than red. Jim Richardson’s idea of different is in what powers his Model A. At a glance, Jim’s roaster is a nice full-fendered traditional-style car, but on closer inspection, it becomes apparent that Jim was thinking way outside of the proverbial box when he decided that his heater needed a ’32 Ford B-motor. This isn’t your typical Babbit-bearinged ’banger, either; this one’s been hot rodded with an overhead-valve conversion and completely modernized internals.

No stranger to hot rods, Jim originally purchased the car in 1989 as an unfinished project; it was a drivetrain-free roller with small-block Chevy motor mounts resident between the Model A framerails. Jim was OK with that, until he spotted the old hulking ’banger lurking around the scrap pile. He made a quick deal to include the four in the purchase price and took his prize home. After four years of wrench, weld, hammer, and paint, Jim’s hopped-up B-powered homebuilt made its maiden voyage. Now that it’s broken in, Jim spends his happiest hours behind the wheel, chasing the horizon with his friends, collecting rock chips, bug splats, and hot rod stories.
