To buy or build a hot rod is sometimes a gamble. It’s not a question of knowing when to hold ’em and knowing when to fold ’em. It’s more like you must know what you’re gettin’ and know what is bitchin’. Know when to walk away. Know what is fun. Butch Thress of Knoxville, Tennessee, took a gamble, in a way, giving up a high-end pair in hopes of walking away with a jackpot with a full-house hot rod. He sold a ’34 tudor sedan and a ’34 three-window coupe in order to own the baddest hot rod he could think of. He turned to his friend Bobby Alloway of Alloway’s Hot Rod Shop in Knoxville to create this awesome big-block ’33 coupe. Butch said he wanted a car that runs and sounds like a hot rod, looks right, and sits right. The finished look itself tells you that Butch and Bobby were most certainly playing with a full deck.

With nothing up his sleeve, Bobby went to work adding a punched Chevy 454 from Jim Miller Racing engines in Maryville, Tennessee.

The car’s many features listed in the following tech box let you know that for Butch, the odds were in his favor.

Butch really felt he would have a winner with this car. When he gathered in his chips and headed for Bobby’s to pick the car up, he knew it for sure. As Butch turned the key and tipped his hat to Bobby, you could hear him say, “Been a pleasure doin’ business with you boys. You’re aces with me.” And with the first rip down the highway, Butch knew the gamble paid off.
