Vern’s back in the saddle. After a 30-year hiatus, he’s returned to street rodding. His first rod was a T-bucket that he built at the tender age of 21. After that it was gearhead city, always playing with one type of car or another—usually musclecars. Eventually he found his way back to the righteous path and is now the proud owner of this screaming-yellow phantom three- window coupe.

We know what you’re thinking, but it’s actually not a Minotti body you see riding the rails on this tube chassis. Vern located a very solid (but not running) ’37 five-window coupe from a local classic car dealer and knew that he would finally see his vision come to life. Ya see, Vern’s vision of the perfect ’37 included shortening the cockpit by moving the rear part of the top forward about 3 inches. This not only eliminated the quarter windows but emphasized the overall coupe-ness of the car. There was one thing missing from Vern’s vision, though: the 3-inch pie-cut section job. He wasn’t too sure about it at first, but now that it’s been accomplished, he’s convinced it was the right thing to do. After a three-year buildup, Vern debuted the car at the NSRA Nationals 2001 in Louisville, Kentucky, where it won a Pro’s Pick award and garnered a feature and cover shot from yours truly. The car is appropriately named too, because it reflects exactly how Vern feels now that he finally has another rod to call his own.
