When it comes to rods and customs, appearances can be deceiving. When we first received 18-year-old Jeffrey Huntoon's membership package, we glanced at the pictures, thought "nice little pickup," and went on about our day. Upon closer inspection, however, we found quite a few remarkable things. First and foremost, young Jeffrey is already the purveyor of his own business, Jeffries Hot Rod Electrical Repair, which allows him to sort out wiring and electrical systems for customers while attending Long Beach City College. This alone is an accomplishment worthy of praise and a Young Gun of the Month prize, as it takes real guts to start up a hot rod-oriented business and buck the typical college tradition of working at a retail establishment or mooching off mom and dad for four years.
The second thing to strike our fancy was the fact that this "nice little pickup" is in fact an amazing example of craftsmanship once you look at the details. What started as a stock longbed is now a flawless stepside short box; the headlights are frenched, the door frames pie-cut, and the door edges curved. A tube radio hides a custom top-notch stereo, the A/C is hidden behind and under the dash, and the upholstery clones '56 T-bird tuck 'n' roll. Other details include a dropped front axle, Ford 9-inch rear, disc brakes, a fresh 350 bellowing through custom pipes, and an all-new electrical system. Jeff accomplished all of this in the driveway with help from his dad and his friend Rover. A Goodguys Top Ten pick helped validate his efforts, and now Jeffrey can brag about being part of an even more exclusive group, the Young Gun of the Month crowd. For his efforts Jeff will receive a $400 gift certificate redeemable at So-Cal Speed Shop, where he can pick up all sorts of awesome speed gear for his smooth red pickup.
