Did you know... Egge Machine and Speed Shop is more than a nostalgic parts distributor? We are also a manufacturer. We manufacture cast pistons and stainless steel valves in our shop, literally in our back yard in Santa Fe Springs, CA. Please follow along as we take you on a quick tour of our Machine Shop.
We start the tour off with Marcia in our Engineering department
Marcia reviews customer supplied specifications and updates CAD drawings for revisions to our pistons' permanent steel molds and intake and exhaust valves.
Over in the foundry we pour our pistons. Andres and Hoctavio heat and prepare the molds, and prepare the pot of molten A332 high-silicone aluminum. They add our secret family recipe of magnesium and titanium each morning and de-gas the mixture with argon to remove the hydrogen, which reduces the porosity of the aluminum. Pouring the actual pistons is an art form in itself. Some molds require a slightly faster pour than other molds. These guys have to be part chemist and part artist in this crucial first step of the piston manufacturing process.
The pistons get "de-horned" cutting off the gates and risers, then heat-treated and rough turned to make ready for the CNC mills and lathes. Ubaldo will take a sample from the freshly poured pistons and do a rough cut to check for porosity.
Egge Machine Company has three CNC stations or "cells" for milling and machining the pistons. In these cells you will find the expert work of Daniel, Rudolfo, and Raul using CNC lathes and a VMC 5-axis mill. Gonzalo will at times work the Van Norman piston grinders and the Cincinnati skirt grinder. Jesse will work the Sunnen hone, grinder or mills when needed. All the guys are cross-trained to help out in each department of the shop.
Another important aspect of the shop is the Quality Assurance department. Humberto and Mark will make first article, in process, and final inspection of all the pistons before packaging them in the special Egge crates.
The shop does more than manufacture pistons. We have a completely outfitted pump remanufacturing facility. Jose sets up the variety of jigs and templates to remanufacture oil, fuel and water pumps specifically to keep the juices flowing in your vintage mill.
Michael is the "Babbitt King". If you have a vintage engine, which requires babbitt bearings on the rods or block, Michael will pour and machine the babbitt to your specifications.
The intake and exhaust of your engine depends highly on the valves. Size, champher, slots and grooves are closely machined with an EDM and precision lathes. Jaime is the man behind these machines paying close attention to the minute details of our stainless steel valve manufacture.
The Machine Shop Manager, Dan Martin keeps the crew focused. Some say his deep voice can be heard above the constant hum of the machines like the "Voice of God".
We are very proud of our Machine Shop Crew. They come in way before the California sun rises and you will always find a smile on their faces knowing their work is helping our customers enjoy their dream cars. American craftsmanship is very important here at Egge where we keep the values and traditions of the American automotive heritage alive with American manufacturing. Anything else is, well, un-American.
