Crab Cap Sparks
PerTronix Performance Products has recently released two new Ignitor conversion kits for the Ford Flathead 1942-48 crab style two-bolt distributors, one with the original Ignitor module that has been on the market for over 40 years, and one using the Ignitor II. This solid-state electronic ignition system is completely hidden under the distributor cap, retaining an original appearance while offering all the advantages of more expensive ignition systems. Test results show that the Ignitor delivers a 2:1 improvement over points type systems in current fall time for increased coil output. The system is designed for use with most point-type coils, but for optimal performance use PerTronix's Flame-Thrower 40,000V coil.
The Ignitor II senses current levels in the coil and uses a powerful micro controller to adjust the dwell to maintain peak energy throughout the entire rpm range. Compared to the original Ignitor and point-type systems, the Ignitor II develops up to four times more available energy between 3,000 and 5,000 rpm and nearly double the available plug voltage respectively. Ignitor II higher rpm performance is improved when used with the new Flame-Thrower II super low resistance (0.6 ohms) 45,000V coil, but the system is compatible with any induction coil. Ignitor kits are 50-state legal and come with a 30-month warranty. For more information, contact PerTronix at (909) 599-5955 or www.pertronix.com.
Flaming River has a new addition to its line of steering column products. They've taken the popular roadster-style steering column and added the modern convenience of five-position tilt. This new column is ideal for early full-size, roadsters, and the early 1953-62 Corvette. With only 5 1/2 inches from the bottom of the dish to the top of the column's shroud, this compact space-saving design has a nostalgic look and full tilt functionality. This new roadster-style tilt column fits snug against the dash and, compared to a standard tilt column, allows for an additional 2 inches of clearance in the driver seat.
Each column is CNC machined from high-grade 304 stainless steel, comes with a 1 3/4-inch tube diameter, and is available in a variety of lengths and finishes, including paintable mill, polished, and black or custom powdercoat. Each column comes standard with a GM 4 1/4-inch wiring connector, horn functionality, cancelling cam, turn signal arm, tilt lever, and hazard knob. For more information, contact Flaming River at (800) 648-8022 or www.flamingriver.com.
With this new cable throttle mounting bracket from Stromberg Carburetor, the popular Stromberg 97 3x2 Tri-power setup is even easier to use, particularly on small-block Chevy and Ford engines. It's also compatible with most Ford Flathead tri-power intake manifolds, though not with the stock fuel pump. Securely mounted between the carburetor and intake manifold, the new cable throttle bracket positions the cable for optimum, bind-free pull on the Stromberg progressive linkage. A fixing hole is also provided for the small extension bracket supplied with most hot rod auto-trans kickdown cable kits. A separate side arm provides a mount for a traditional return spring.
If converting from a four-barrel carb, and already having Lokar-type throttle and kickdown cables in place, the new cable bracket, coupled with Stromberg's new kickdown compatible progressive linkages, help make the swap as easy as possible. All existing cables, and even the 4-bbl return springs, can be retained. The kit includes a new carburetor to manifold gasket.
