By adding Mallory metal to the crank in strategic locations, he was able to zero balance the crank. This creates a foundation upon which to build an "internally balanced" engine, which is more durable than an "externally balanced" engine. You can see where the tungsten has been added to the crank to assure a smooth-running, well-balanced rotating assembly.
