Torque Converters
Phoenix Transmission Products' TIG brazes the bowl fins that have been bent to alter the stall speed. By brazing each fin individually, they stay in their intended position. Unbrazed fins can work loose or bend back under fluid pressure.

Torque Converters
These are four different stators used in the 245mm converter to alter stall speed and torque multiplication. Note the differences in fin angle and window proportions. Dozens of different stall speeds can be achieved by using the right fin angle on the bowl and the right stator combination. Experience will allow the builder to select the right combination based on the particulars of your car and its intended use.

The converter on the left has an anti-balloon plate added, while the one on on the right has a stock-style cover. The plate helps the converter resist flexing and expansion in the thin hub area under extreme conditions. These plates come in various diameters and thicknesses depending on the application and are recommended for high-horsepower applications, especially with a power-adder like N.O.S. or forced induction. Phoenix uses antiballoon plates on all of its 245mm converters.

This is a 245mm-based Phoenix 4L80E converter with a billet steel front cover and a billet clutch. This converter will have a stall speed of 3,000 rpm using this combination of components and still have a lockup clutch for cool running and reduced cruise rpm behind the customer's 750hp big-block.

Here are two completed torque converters for the 700-R4. The larger unit is the stock diameter of 298 mm and has a maximum efficient stall speed of about 2,500 rpm. The smaller converter is a custom 245mm lockup, which has been built to achieve a 3,000-rpm stall speed and still retain full lockup function. Phoenix uses a custom clutch and damper that has 25 percent more clutch area than even the larger 298mm clutch system.

Once converters are welded and leak-checked, Phoenix balances each one to 0 grams on this dedicated torque converter balancer. Any needed weight is then TIG-welded to the cover in the proper position. Precision balancing ensures vibration-free operation and extended component life.
