Springs "remember" the shape they acquire during the heat-treating process. A spring can be pressed or pounded into another shape at room temperature but it will inevitably revert to its original heat-set shape, even if partially. The correct way to reset a spring's shape requires a trip into a furnace, and preparation for that usually costs far more than a new main plate. View Related Article
