Not only do you always want to keep a good eye on your weld bead, get attuned (literally) to listening to the sound you hear while welding—you want to hear an uninterrupted, clean buzz; any crackling or snapping (Rice Krispies it’s not) means your settings are off, your contact tip to work distance is incorrect, or your nozzle/tip is dirty and needs to be replaced.
