Rope seals are used fore and... Rope seals are used fore and aft; the timing gear cover seal lightly coated with grease after being fitted and trimmed flush with the block/oil pan surface. Mike uses brand-new, quality... Mike uses brand-new, quality water pumps on all applicable builds, for obvious reasons (Speedway’s sealed-bearing pumps in this case). Notice too that the block has already received its coat (or two) of Ford Bronze engine paint from Bill Hirsch. Another rope seal for the... Another rope seal for the oil pan’s rear main. Not only is proper seal fitment important, so too is ensuring the pan’s seal flange is clean and as straight as possible (the gasket rail should be checked and straightened out, if needed, as well). It’s important to check the... It’s important to check the rear oil pump idler gear bushing prior to installing the pan (if you don’t do it now, it’s a lot of work to get to it once the engine is assembled). Gasket dressing(s) preference varies from one to another, but it’s hard to beat Gasgacinch, that’s for sure. It’s important to check the... And with that, we’ve got ourselves a done long-block—a pretty decent looking one at that. As you’ll notice, we chose to use an OE steel crank pulley/balancer rather than an (expensive) aftermarket aluminum one. It’s straight and true … and cheap. Now onto the top end, brief... Now onto the top end, brief as it may be. Some had asked if I were going to use earlier 59A heads on the 8BA, but that wasn’t in my game plan, as it would’ve somewhat defeated to the point of going with the later engine in the first place by altering the coolant flow. H&H’s Navarro Racing 8BA cylinder heads were the only option for me … un-polished and in their natural glory. Adding more time to the job,... Adding more time to the job, I’d requested studs rather than using bolts. Each stud was coated with Permatex thread sealer before Mike graciously installed them. Next, a copper coating is sprayed on the Best Gasket graphite composite head gaskets prior to setting them in place. Heads get torqued to 55 lb-ft... Heads get torqued to 55 lb-ft starting from the center and working outward in a back-and-forth, zigzag sort of pattern. This is done twice.
