Here’s what that parting line looked like after Kustom City’s Scott Holton knocked it off with an 80-grit disc on his D-A sander. The gelcoat’s glossy finish acts like a blocking coat on metal. You can sand it off and look for low spots in the panel, which will still be shiny. Take care not to sand through the gelcoat layer, as that might reveal air bubbles in the fiberglass below.
