That's Don's pickup in front of Gate 5 (from 1909-73, Gate 5 was the main entrance into the speedway): "I re-upped for a couple of years in the Army Air Corps, so I didn't get out till 1949. I got discharged in Georgia and drove my pickup straight to Indy. I met up with my friends Jack McGrath and Manny Ayulo who were racing sprints and midgets around there. I spent a couple of weeks with them running all over the Midwest. I heard about the first Bonneville and headed to the salt on my way home."
