As we were wrapping up this month's Archive installment I got a call "out of the blue" from Bob Barmore, who is the current owner of the David Martin/Skip Barrett 1929 roadster. The odd thing was I was preparing a feature on this said hot rod and hadn't talked to him in over three years! Weird coincidence or divine intervention? Not sure what to call it, but Barmore's news was that he was meeting the original builder who hadn't seen the car in 50 years. Needless to say we postponed my efforts in hopes of getting more correct and missing information.
The above photo is from the 1963 Rod and Custom Motorama held inside the Long Beach World's Fair Arena. At the middle, far left, is the roadster when it was owned by Skip Barrett. So for now enjoy these photos from the Angel Hair show era while we continue our research about this neat and tidy hot rod.
LaVonne Bremer's customized 1958 Corvette was painted numerous times by Larry Watson and was well documented. Here it features a fully restyled front end with quad headlights, molded grille surround filled, and a custom chrome tube grille. Paint color is not known, but it is a singe shade with mild pinstriping.
Larry Garmon's Harley Knuckle received at least a couple Larry Watson paintjobs. First one was blue followed by rainbow hues over a white heavy 'flaked base. The bike features a wild molded and fully sculpted Wassell peanut tank along with tons of chrome, ape hanger bars, and ripple and flared tipped twin pipes.
The show sign for this little bucket read: 1924 T roadster pickup, 1956 Buick engine, 1937 LaSalle trans, Halibrand quick-change rearend, 60 coats of Cobalt Blue lacquer, owned by Reliable Auto Wreckers of Riverside, CA. This of course is "TV Tommy" Ivo's T in its latter version. That's the "Busonic" behind it.
Among the hot rods, customs, horseless carriages, sports cars, boats, and at least one beauty queen, many well-known vehicles are on display here. Some of them are Skip Barrett's 1929 roadster; Bob McNulty's customized fiberglass Astra; George Barris' hover car, "XPAK 400," the R&C 1960 Ford Custom Starliner project car; Bob Nordskog's 1963 Corvette ":The Asteroid," which was featured recently in this section; the Bob Porter/Doyle Gammel 1932 three-window coupe; Roy Abendroth's 1955 Buick "Busonic;" Sandiego Prowlers;l and the 1956 Ford F-100 "Lil Nugget." Can you identify any more?
